I’m very lucky to have the beautiful town of Arundel on my side of the county. I discovered it a couple of years ago and still find myself returning time and time again. Its paved streets, antique shops, sweeping countryside and the magnificent Arundel Castle rising above it all give the town a charm that feels almost timeless — as though the castle is quietly watching over its peace.

As wonderful as Arundel is throughout the year, it becomes truly extraordinary during its annual Tulip Festival in the castle gardens.

Arundel Castle Tulip Festival: A Burst of Colour

Arundel is known for its annual Tulip Festival, held at the start of spring within the magnificent Arundel Castle grounds.

It’s one of the most brilliant sights to witness — especially for anyone who loves colour, flowers, or photography.

I have never seen such splendour. Thousands upon thousands of tulips fill the gardens, each one different in variety, shape, and shade.

Their colours are what make the festival truly unforgettable: ruby reds, fiery oranges, soft pastels, elegant whites, and so many unique varieties I had never had the pleasure of seeing before.

Antique Shops & A Film Camera Find

If the Tulip Festival wasn’t enticing enough, then let me tell you about the multitude of antique shops and independent businesses that line the streets of Arundel. Each one has its own character, its own atmosphere, and its own treasures waiting to be discovered.

My favourite shop, however, hides a small room filled with vintage film cameras of every shape, make, and size. It feels like stepping back in time — shelves of history, craftsmanship, and stories you can hold in your hands.

A Cosy Stop in Town: The Pizzeria I Can’t Recommend Enough

After exploring the castle and the beautiful Cathedral it was time for a spot of lunch — and the best place for that is an Italian restaurant called La Campania.

I couldn’t recommend it more. If you love authentic Italian food, this is absolutely worth a visit. They offer delicious and very affordable lunch dishes, and the puddings are just as splendid.

The staff are friendly, the atmosphere is superb, and the food warms the heart.

It’s the perfect place to pause, recharge, and enjoy something comforting before wandering back out into the charm of Arundel.

A Peaceful Walk to the Lake

Arundel is surrounded by water — the River Arun winds around and through the town before eventually meeting Swanbourne Lake, and this is where we headed to walk off our lunch.

The road leading to the lake is lined with tall trees, creating a peaceful, shaded walkway that opens out onto a lovely old bridge. The water here is a soft turquoise, and the algae drifting beneath the surface paints a picture all of its own.

The walk around Swanbourne Lake is wonderfully calm, eventually leading out onto the South Downs National Park, where rolling hills greet you and wide, open views stretch for miles from the summit.

Returning to the lake, you notice just how full of life it is. Ducks, swans, geese, and a variety of waterbirds make the whole area feel vibrant and alive — a perfect spot for nature lovers and photographers alike.

What left with me…

Other than a film camera purchased in one of the antique shops — and a tummy full of pizza — my own camera was filled with colour, wildlife, and flowers.

I still return to Arundel to this day. The views are always changing, and there’s something new to discover every single time.

If you’re looking for a calm and beautiful day out in West Sussex, I couldn’t recommend Arundel enough. It’s a place that stays with you long after you’ve left.

Warmest wishes,

Kat
