West Dean Gardens

There are some places where you instantly feel calm and refreshed — and for me, West Dean Gardens is one of those places. Nestled in the countryside just outside the city of Chichester, it’s somewhere I’ve returned to more times than I can count, and somehow it never feels the same twice.

There is always something new to see, to photograph, to explore, or simply to wonder at. The gardens are cared for so beautifully, changing gently with the seasons and ensuring that boredom never has a chance to settle in.

A forever blooming garden

One thing I love most about West Dean is how alive it feels. No matter the time of year, there will always be something blooming — but spring, for me, is the most glorious of all.

It brings bright colours, blossoms, insects, and that unmistakable sense of new growth. Every path you take leads you to something different, something you didn’t notice last time, even if you’ve walked it a hundred times before.

The flowers, the borders, the rows — everything feels placed with such care. Each plant seems to complement the next, creating a harmony that feels both intentional and wonderfully natural.

The little characters of West Dean

One of the things that always brings West Dean to life for me is the wildlife that seems to weave itself into every corner of the gardens.

The two bantam chickens are often the first to make an appearance — tiny, fluffy, and full of personality as they potter around the veggie beds like they’re supervising the day’s work.

They’re such charming little characters, and I always look out for them.

Then there are the ever‑present mallard ducks, gliding calmly across the river water as if they’ve lived here longer than anyone.

On my last visit, I even found one happily splashing around in what can only be described as a duck bath — completely content, completely unbothered, and completely adorable.

And of course, the robins.

They’re the true companions of West Dean. They sing from the hedgerows, hop along the paths beside you, and sometimes perch just close enough to make you feel like you’ve made a tiny friend.

Their song follows you through the gardens, adding a soft soundtrack to every step.

Why West Dean will always be one of my favourites.

Every visit feels special — I usually come home with a singing heart, a full SD card of photos, and a handful of happy memories.

West Dean represents exactly what Wispy Willow is all about: slowing down.

Whether you’re a gardener, a photographer, or simply someone who enjoys a peaceful wander followed by a cup of tea (and maybe a slice of cake), West Dean Gardens has a way of settling into your heart and staying in your mind long after you’ve left.

I hope you enjoyed this little wander with me. If you visit West Dean yourself, I’d love to hear what you discover.

Best Wishes,

Kat
